Cuttyhunk

July 12-14, 2005

Our friends, Larry and Jayne, live in California and keep their boat in Friday Harbor, WA. This year, they decided to explore the east coast of the U.S. and Central America. (tracking map HERE)

They arrived in Westport on June 22 and we spent a few days hangin' on their boat, the Knotty Dog, and testing Westport's restaurants. They had upcoming cruising plans in Nantucket Sound so we agreed to meet later in Cuttyhunk with the two boats.

Cindy provisions Azor, Tom checks over last minute operations and mechanics, and we set off for a 3-day visit with our new found friends.

July 12: 9 kts. out of the SW, seas 1-2 ft., good visibility

Arrival in Cuttyhunk channel where we find the harbor half empty. Very strange for the middle of July.

Jayne, Ziggy, and Larry drive past us!

They haven't seen Azor out of her slip.

Ahoy!

This is patchy fog?

We go for an afternoon sail and Tom points out Naushon Island, part of the Elizabeth Island chain.

Tom immediately recognized Ziggy had falsely been labeled a stink potter dog, whereas, he would more correctly be called a blow boat dog as can be seen by his serene nature on boarding the proper type of craft. It was mistakingly assumed that Ziggy had bonded with Tom. More likely, he bonded with Azor. So ...

July 14: wake up to fog coming in and we're supposed to be heading back to Westport today. There's a wifi network here called Cuttyhunk so Tom and Larry look at the weather maps and thunderstorms are predicted later in the day. Larry says, "if you're gonna go today, you'd better make a run for it right now!" So, we throw the breakfast dishes in the sink and ready the boat to leave. Jayne says, "if you turn around, I promise I'll make it worth your while by making a Mexican dinner tonight." Sounds enticing but, we'll give it a try per Capt. Tom.

We wave goodbye as Ziggy howls on the foredeck. Visibility only 200 feet. Cindy's never sailed in fog and is a little nervous.

We enter the shipping channel in Buzzard's Bay. Tom at the helm (motoring) reading the GPS while Cindy reads the paper charts, and learns more about using the radar. Lots of looking out and talking back and forth. We find these combinations make a good team.

Ahhh....the Westport Harbor entrance buoy...looks like we're going to make it home. Back at the dock safe and sound. We hear chirping and see the baby barn swallows are nested in one of the pilings.

Our visit with Larry, Jayne, and Ziggy was very special and we're looking forward to seeing them soon.
